Recipe for Jalapeno Poppers

Jalapeno poppers are an appetizer staple - they're a total crowd-pleaser, and we're guessing these cheesy, creamy, spicy bites are a mainstay at your favorite take-out place or go-to local eatery. But if you're trying to scale back on your food spending this winter, why not try making your own jalapeno poppers at home?

You only need a handful of ingredients and a little bit of time to make this tasty appetizer at home... and it's definitely not as complicated as you think! Plus, this easy jalapeno popper recipe (inspired by this one, from Spend With Pennies!) uses the oven instead of the deep fryer - so you'll save money on frying oil, and get to enjoy a healthier take on this junk food classic. Plus, cooking in the oven is much less messy than dealing with a pot of hot oil... so the clean-up will be a breeze.

This easy jalapeno popper recipe for game days, tailgates, movie nights, and everything in between. There really is never a bad time to pop a few of these melty, savory bite-sized snacks!

Ingredients

Here are all of the ingredients you'll need:

  • 12 jalapeno peppers
  • 6 ounces of softened cream cheese
  • 4 ounces of shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely minced (or a pinch of garlic powder)
  • 1 tablespoon of bacon bits (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of Panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tablespoon of melted butter

Method

Here's how to make jalapeno poppers at home!

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.
  2. Carefully slice the jalapenos in half, lengthwise. Use a small spoon to scoop out the seeds and membranes - wear gloves or remember to wash your hands right after!
  3. In a bowl, combine the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, garlic, and bacon, if you're using it. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the Panko bread crumbs and melted butter.
  5. Use a spoon to fill the jalapeno halves with the cream cheese mixture.
  6. Top with the buttered bread crumbs.
  7. Arrange the stuffed jalapeno halves on a foil-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for around 20 minutes, until the cheese is melted, the bread crumbs are browned, and the jalapenos are softened.
  9. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Enjoy!

These homemade jalapeno poppers are delicious on their own, or dipped in ranch, blue cheese dressing, or even sweet chili sauce for an extra kick of spice.
