Home Cleaning Tips to Ease Allergies

Home Cleaning Tips to Ease Allergies 1

Allergies are no fun. From itchy eyes, stuffy noses, sneezes, and more, allergy season can make it hard to enjoy everyday activities. However, there are a few things such as cleaning the areas of the home to relieve allergy symptoms.

Decrease your chance of triggering allergic reactions from dust mites, pollen, mildew, mold spores, pet dander, and other sources.

Follow these tips to help manage allergens:

  • Vacuum at least once per week, though two is even better. Be sure your vacuum has an HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. This is important because regular filters cannot catch the smallest allergens. Therefore, they are sucked into the vacuum and then blown into the air, making it easy to breathe in. An HEPA filter traps even the tiniest allergens.
  • Avoid scented products such as carpet shampoos, household cleaners, and detergents since these can aggravate allergies and asthma. There are many fragrance-free products available that work well for a variety of cleaning purposes.
  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth when cleaning.
  • Use damp cloths, mops, or sponges for cleaning. These will trap allergens rather than scattering them in the air as dusting or sweeping does.
  • Wash your bed sheets weekly, and your blankets and throw rugs monthly. This helps reduce the particulates that cause allergic reactions.
  • Clean bathrooms regularly to keep mold and mildew from building up.

A clean home is ideal to prevent allergic reactions more frequently. Taking the steps above can reduce allergy triggers.
